WHAT IS NEW ON OUR WEBPAGE...Rhode Island's Bishop Tobin has asked the Boston Regional ICE office to declare a moratorium on immigration raids in Rhode Island. Read the actual letter here:
Upcoming Events: OHIO is getting organized! There are three different training opportunities we'd like to call to your attention. The first is in Cleveland where Monsignor Ramazzini from Guatemala will lead a day long discussion on immigration. The second is a two day Interfaith Immigration event in Columbus. Both should prove to help advance your organizing efforts on this issue. The third is Cardinal Rodriguez from Honduras who will be in Cincinnati for almost a week talking about immigration. Cleveland, OH - September 13, 2008 - the Office of Hispanic Ministry and Monsignor Romero Committee will sponsor a day long immigration training with Monsignor Alvaro Ramazzini. A flyer can be found here. Columbus, OH - September 10 & 11, 2008. An Interfaith Immigration Summit will offer skills trainings to prepare advocates for the upcoming legislative efforts. They have a website here. Cincinnati, OH - September 13 - 17, 2008. Cardinal Rodriguez from Honduras will speak at a number of venues on immigration and global solidarity. For questions please contact Dr. Mike Gable, Mission Office Director. You can view the Cardinal's public schedule here. Sodus, NY - "Church Watch" program in response to ICE targeting churches: Every year thousands of migrant farmworkers, many from Mexico, come to harvest crops and work on dairy farms in Upstate New York. Recently raids and random pick-ups of Latino workers by ICE and Border Patrol have frightened the workers and restricted their movement. According to Catholic Immigration News (June, 2008) ICE officials have “stated that as a matter of practice ICE does not target churches, hospitals, or other important basic needs programs for enforcement actions.” However, increased presence of Border Patrol in the vicinity of the Church of the Epiphany in Sodus, NY before, during, and after the Sunday afternoon Spanish Mass and the arrest of a Mexican man en route to Mass on his bicycle, inspired community members and others to begin an Anglo “Church Watch” program both to witness and stand in solidarity with their Latino neighbors. Since the week this video was filmed by a community leader, the Border Patrol has not been seen near the church during Mass, but Mass attendance has dwindled from 200 or more to 30-35 people. Workers are increasingly isolated.
Posted by Ruth Putnam Marchetti, Diocese of Rochester Recent Changes:We're very excited to welcome Tony Cube as the new National Campaign Manager. Tony comes to JFI from the Washington State Catholic Conference. Also, our website is undergoing revision. If you encounter any broken links or have suggestions on making it better - please email Chris West and let him know. Thank you! July 2008 The National Migration Conference was a huge success! Hundreds of people from around the country gathered in DC to share ideas on how to best work with immigrants and refugees. The Carnegie Foundation had a full page add in the New York Times reminding people that "America remains a land of immigrants". Check it out. February 2008
